Funny Onigiri

Onigiri are delicious Japanese rice balls, playful and colorful, perfect for a fun family cooking activity. Paired with an egg-free mayonnaise for a tasty alternative twist, this recipe is not only delicious but also perfectly suited for little aspiring chefs.

Ingredients for the Onigiri Rice:
300 g rice
300 ml water
4 cl rice vinegar
10 g sugar
4 g salt
Optional colorful ingredients: spinach, beetroot, carrots, black sesame seeds, smoked paprika
Instructions for the Onigiri Rice:
Rinse the rice several times until the water runs clear.
Drain the rice and place it in a pot or rice cooker with the water. Let it rest at room temperature for about 25 minutes.
Cover the pot and bring to a boil. Let it boil for 2 to 3 minutes, then reduce to low heat and simmer for about 12 minutes. Turn off the heat and let the rice rest for 10 minutes.
In a bowl, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Add this mixture to the cooked rice and gently stir.
Mix small portions of rice with the colorful ingredients of your choice.
Ingredients for the Onigiri Filling:
200 g cream cheese
2 tablespoons finely chopped chives
1 pinch of pepper
Zest of 1 lemon (optional)
Instructions for the Onigiri Filling:
Mix all the filling ingredients together and adjust the seasoning to taste.
Spread some rice in the palm of your hand, add a small ball of cream cheese filling, then close and shape into a ball.
Enjoy the onigiri as a snack, or wrap them with nori seaweed sheets for a more authentic Japanese experience.
Ingredients for the Egg-Free Mayonnaise:
300 g white beans
2 teaspoons mustard
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
10 tablespoons neutral oil
6 tablespoons sesame oil
Soy sauce
Instructions for the Egg-Free Mayonnaise:
Blend all the ingredients together until very smooth.
